Dwight Gayle boasts impressive record at Elland Road ahead of Newcastle United clash with Leeds United

Leeds United supporters need little introduction to Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle ahead of this week's butting of heads between the two northern powerhouses.

Gayle was linked with a move to Leeds not too long ago, but a transfer failed to materialise, although it is likely the goalscorer would have been a huge hit.

His record at Championship level is as good as the division has had to offer over the past decade. In three separate campaigns for three different clubs, the frontman has scored 59 goals in the second tier, but found it tough to replicate in the top flight.

Bielsa responds to criticism about announcing his team early

Leeds can sympathise with that, having struggled to turn their on-ball dominance into goals and three points in the Premier League on a number of occasions already.

Returning from injury to boost Newcastle's forward line is 30-year-old Gayle who opened his account for the season with a stunning header to secure the win against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

He is likely to feature off the bench against Leeds, with Steve Bruce looking to protect prized asset Callum Wilson who will be expected to lead the line throughout the entirety of a packed Christmas period.

Supporters in the South Stand were not too fond of Gayle's antics the last time Newcastle visited Elland Road, as the striker shushed the home crowd after scoring the game's opening goal.

A repeat of that will not be possible as Leeds are yet to be allowed fans in stadiums, but Gayle's recent record against the Whites is one Bielsa must be cautious of.

Then of West Bromwich Albion, Gayle scored off the bench in a 4-1 win for the Baggies during 2018-19, but was also on the receiving end of a 4-0 drubbing in the reverse fixture with his loan club later on that season.

A brace in Newcastle's last trip to this part of West Yorkshire and a goal in his debut Championship campaign with Peterborough United puts his tally at four goals in his last four games against Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping that the marksman is less like the Championship edition Gayle and more like the Premier League version this Wednesday.
