Dwight Gayle, Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons among Newcastle United players returning to training

Newcastle United players returned to Benton today as Ben Dawson took charge of the squad for the first day of pre-season training.

Dawson will be joined by U23 coach Neil Redfearn as players undergo fitness tests and give blood samples.

After being exiled in the reserves the likes of Rob Elliot, Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons are all back at the senior end of the training complex.

Want away players such as Joselu and Isaac Hayden were also back on duty today.

Another face back in the fold was Dwight Gayle who is back from a stint at West Brom.

It is thought all players have been told it is “back to work” and everybody has been handed a clean slate with a change to impress an incoming manager or head coach.

United have refused to comment on the latest man to be linked with the top job in Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.
