Dwayne Haskins will spend his summer studying film and learning plays

For the Washington Redskins, OTAs are almost over, and minicamp is in the rearview mirror. Summer break is in sight.

For rookie QB Dwayne Haskins, that summer will be filled with studying playbooks and film sessions.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Haskins says that he won’t be getting out and enjoying the D.C. area much in the coming months. Rather, he will be putting in work.

Of course, a 10-day trip to Paris is more than most of us get in a single summer, but the dedication we have already seen from the rookie—in addition to what he says lies ahead of him—is encouraging to hear. Haskins is locked into a QB battle with veteran Case Keenum, and there are voices that are increasingly calling for the first-year signal caller to sit out for the season and learn from the sidelines.

The choice for Haskins to keep his nose in a playbook makes sense, as Redskins coach Jay Gruden has come out and said that he wasn’t shy in giving the rookie material to study up on.

If Haskins is to have even a slight chance of earning the starting job this fall, let alone have a successful career for years to come, then the film room is where he needs to be for much of the coming months. For every successful quarterback the league has seen, their journey started by putting in the work, both mentally and physically.
