Dwayne Haskins picked as Top 10 Rookie of the Year candidate

The NFL offseason is reaching the tipping point, and training camp is now on the horizon, just a couple of weeks out.

As media members and fans enjoy — or suffer through — the final days of summer without football, we can all look ahead to a couple of awards that will be decided this year.

At NFL.com, Lance Zierlein released his top picks to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, and Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins made the cut.

Zierlein points out that in the past, the award is typically won by quarterbacks, though Haskins may have a tough time staving off Case Keenum for long enough to produce an award-winning stat sheet for the year.

“I’m just not sure the necessary elements are in place for Haskins to be that quarterback this season,” Zierlein said, via NFL.com. “Granted, Haskins threw 50 touchdown passes in his lone season as a full-time starter at Ohio State, yet the Redskins’ receiving corps lacks both the production and experience needed to make Haskins’ transition into the league a smooth one.”

In 2018, New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley won the award, but Cleveland Browns rookie QB Baker Mayfield gave him a run for his money despite not starting the first handful of games for the Browns. If Haskins can bide his time and produce when called upon, there is a very good chance that he will find himself in the running for Rookie of the Year when by seasons end.
