Dwayne Haskins officially named backup quarterback for Washington Redskins

It’s been one of the most watched quarterback battles of fall camp in the NFL, and the main competition the media in the D.C. area have been keeping the closest tabs on — the starting quarterback position for the Washington Redskins.

And now, after weeks of highlights, comments, and projections, we have our answer. According to multiple sources, head coach Jay Gruden has officially named veteran Case Keenum the starter, with Haskins listed as the backup for now.

It’s hardly a surprise. Gruden had gone on record stating that he owed it to the No. 15 overall pick in the NFL Draft the chance to start, but time and time again, Haskins has been coming into the game and listed on unofficial depth charts behind both veterans Keenum and Colt McCoy.

Signs have pointed all along to the Redskins taking their time with Haskins, hesitant to rush him into a starting role while he learns the playbook and gets used to the faster pace of the NFL. He has flashed at times, but not enough to give the first rounder the keys to the offense just yet.

It remains to be seen whether this is a game-by-game scenario or whether Haskins will continue to get a look, but for now, the former Ohio State quarterback will have to continue to develop and grow so that he can be successful at the next level.
