Dwayne Haskins’ mistakes overshadowed his good flashes as a runner vs. Browns

Understandably, the national spotlight will fixate on the mistakes of Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins during his NFL debut against the Cleveland Browns.

There, Haskins threw a couple of picks and predictably struggled in areas rookies do.

But he also shined in an unexpected area — as a rusher.

“I can do it,” Haskins said, according to NBC Sports Washington’s Peter Hailey . “I don’t want to. I’d rather throw. But there’s times where you gotta make something happen.”

And Haskins indeed did it, taking his two recorded attempts for 17 yards. He had another solid gain eliminated by a penalty.

This is notable for a few reasons, chief among them Haskins simply wasn’t billed as much of a runner coming out of college. But if he’s showing that sort of playmaking ability in all facets, it might end up setting him apart in the quarterback competition.

As always, the Redskins have to take the good with the bad when it comes to a rookie passer. Unexpectedly, some of the good for Haskins came on the ground.
