Dwayne Haskins isn’t sweating winning the starting job by Week 1

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins would like to be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

But more than anything, he just wants to be ready.

Haskins is trying to digest Jay Gruden’s offense this summer while engaging in a battle with a seasoned veteran like Case Keenum. He understands the battle could go either way, but he merely wants to be ready if he gets his number called, per Peter Hailey of NBC Sports Washington.

“I don’t really worry about starting Week One,” Haskins said. “I just want to be ready to play Week One, whether that’s this year or next year or whenever my time comes for me to play. I just want to make sure that when I do play, I don’t want to look back.”

It is a good approach from Haskins, who appears to be progressing steadily along and is well received by everyone in the building.

But for Haskins, Gruden wants to see him not only learn the offense, but get more confident when it comes to calling plays in the huddle.

A lot can happen over the course of the summer though, so Haskins might just be ready enough to act as the starter in Philadelphia.
