Dwayne Haskins isn’t asking himself ‘why am I not playing?’

Dwayne Haskins knows that he doesn’t need to get a handful of NFL games under his belt this season in order to be good. It could definitely help him start a legendary career early, but it is not necessary for said career to be legendary.

That’s why the rookie in Washington is calm and collected when asked about the starting job for the Redskins. He knows that his name could be called at any moment, with the current starter, Case Keenum, often struggling and now dealing with an injury. It may not help that fellow first-round draft picks Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones are already getting some snaps under their belt, but for Haskins, that’s no matter. When it happens, it happens.

“It’s easy to look at the rookie class and be like, ‘Rookies are playing, why am I not playing?’” Haskins said to ESPN earlier this week. “I want to be like Tom Brady and Drew Brees and that’s something that doesn’t happen overnight. Tom didn’t play at first; Aaron Rodgers didn’t play at first.”

Haskins also said that he was happy for those fellow rookies, taking solace in the sight of his peers seeing an opportunity for success, knowing that it will soon be him as well. When the time comes for Haskins to take the field, he will surely be ready, and this time spent on the sidelines will be one of the main reasons why.
