Dwayne Haskins is already impressing Jay Gruden at Redskins minicamp

That didn’t take long.

Washington Redskins rookie minicamp hasn’t been this large or important in a long time thanks to No. 15 overall pick Dwayne Haskins.

And the Ohio State product is apparently delivering.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden didn’t hold back while praising his rookie passer during a meeting with the press.

From ESPN’s John Keim:

“It’s been a treat,” Gruden said. “He’s made some throws that turn your head without a doubt.”

“We’re going to throw the ball out there and let them compete,” Gruden said. “He obviously displayed enough skill set to warrant the 15th pick, and we’ll give him an opportunity to see how far he can take this thing without a doubt.”

According to the report, Haskins was especially impressive in one-on-one reps, even connecting with former Ohio State teammate Terry McLaurin for a score.

This time of year, a coaching staff isn’t going to bemoan a draft pick’s performance. But with video evidence of Haskins already making some impressive throws in his debut, Gruden’s comments sure don’t sound like simple coachspeak.

And if Haskins is impressing in May, he might be starting in September.
