Dwayne Haskins inches closer to first career start

Dwayne Haskins knows he’s close to his first NFL start.

With Case Keenum still hurting, the Washington Redskins might not have a choice but to start the 2019 draft’s 15th overall pick.

And while Haskins kept his excitement somewhat measured at first, it wasn’t long before it cracked through.

“I get hyped every day I get to put a helmet on,” Haskins said, according to Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. “Even more excited to put a first start on film.”

Haskins has admittedly had a rough go of it to start. Over 22 attempts, he’s thrown for 140 yards on a 54.5 completion percentage, throwing no touchdowns with four interceptions.

But in the middle of this lost season, there might be no better time to let Haskins learn on the fly than now. Given Keenum’s veteran status, he could always miss Friday, take to a walkthrough well Saturday and start anyway.

But right now? It looks like it could be a full-blown audition for Haskins.
