Dwayne Haskins: ‘I know I will be great’

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins knows that he won’t be a star player in the NFL overnight, he’s ready for it to take some time.

His performance in the Redskins’ 30-10 preseason loss on Thursday went a long way to show the amount of work left to be done to make Haskins a polished QB, but those closer to practice have seen that this rookie takes that challenge seriously and that he’s doing everything he can to get better.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Haskins is treating his path in the NFL like a graduate course on quarterbacking:

As one Washington Redskins quarterback received the playcall from the coach, another — rookie Dwayne Haskins — would inch his way toward the huddle. Then, as the other quarterback — either Colt McCoy or Case Keenum — relayed the play in the huddle, Haskins would lean in to listen. And learn.

If you were to ask Haskins, he’d give you his own form of ‘coach-speak,’ explaining that he knows it’s going to take a lot of time to be the player he wants to be, but that isn’t going to deter him. We’ve seen the flashy plays he’s capable of making, but what we don’t see are the hours of work he puts in behind closed doors.

“It’s just going to happen naturally, organically,” Haskins said, via ESPN. “I had to come to terms with that. Now that I’ve been here for a little bit, it’s like, man, it’s a process. … By no means am I settling. I know that I want to be great and I know I will be great. It’s just that I have to be in a place where I know what I’m doing.”

Nobody expects the rookie to make the leap overnight, but Redskins fans can rest assured; their franchise QB is serious about being great.
