Dwayne Haskins dead: NFL quarterback dies after being hit by car in Florida at age of 24

NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins has died at the age of just 24 after being hit by a car in South Florida.

Haskins was a star quarterback at Ohio State University and was drafted by Washington in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, before being released after two seasons.

He joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 as third-string quarterback but was expected to be given an opportunity to challenge for the starting spot during the offseason following the retirement of franchise legend Ben Roethlisberger.

Haskins had been in Florida training with a number of Steelers teammates when he was struck by a car, agent Cedric Saunders confirming news of his death on Saturday morning.

Steelers teammate TJ Watt led the tributes, writing on Twitter: “The world lost a great person today. When Dwayne first walked into the locker room I could tell he was an upbeat guy. He was always making people smile, never taking life for granted. His impact on me will last a forever.”

Born in New Jersey, Haskins had just one season as a starter at Ohio State - where he beat out future No1 pick Joe Burrow to the job - and set numerous programme records, finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting.
