DVSA confirms when driving tests and lessons in England can restart

Driving tests and lessons will be allowed to restart in England later this month, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed.

Car driving tests and driving lessons were suspended when England went into lockdown in January - but the DVSA has announced the dates they will restart.

Driving lessons will be allowed to take place from April 12, while the first driving tests will take place on April 22.

The DVSA has also announced that theory tests will be allowed to take place from April 12.

If you have previously had a driving test cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the DVSA will contact you to rearrange the test.

Learner drivers who need to book a test will be able to do so online, but they may face a long wait as the DVSA works through a backlog of cancelled tests.

The DVSA implemented various rules for lessons and tests when they restarted after the first lockdown last summer.

Some test centres have had to close their waiting areas due to social distancing measures and learner drivers are asked to arrive no more than five minutes before their test starts.

Drivers are also asked to thoroughly clean the interior of their car before the test begins and wear a face covering for the duration of the test.
