DVLA warns of lengthy delays to driving licence renewals amid paperwork backlog

Scots motorists who are submitting paper driving licence renewals are facing a lengthy wait to receive their vital documents.

The DVLA said that industrial action and social distancing measures are resulting in “continuing delays with paper applications”.

Staff are said to be receiving around 60,000 items of mail every day, which is leading to delays of six to 10 weeks to process a number of documents.

Affected documents include changing a photo, changing the name or address, or applying for a first provision licence with a UK identity.

There are also additional delays in processing more complex transactions, such as driving licence applications that require an medical investigation.

Most motorists waiting for their applications to be processed are still allowed to drive. It is reported up to 1.4 million applications are affected by the backlog.

A statement on the UK Government website reads: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused but we are working as quickly as we can to deal with your application.

“We receive around 60,000 items of mail every day that needs to be opened and processed.”

The DVLA is urging motorists to apply for documents online as there are currently no delays to the service.

Their statement adds: “The majority of our transactions are carried out by customers online. Online services are working as normal, so please use these where possible.”
