DVLA to unveil digital driving licences and plastic cards could be phased out

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is getting ready to introduce digital driving licences - and physical versions may soon be obsolete.

The DVLA is planning to roll out the major overhaul over the next few years, starting with mobile provisional licences for learner drivers.

These will be accessible on a smartphone app, making them easier to access and harder to lose.

After this, it is expected that the digital licences will be available to everybody with a full licence.

As reported by the Daily Record, plastic licences will still be issued to new drivers alongside the new tech - but after some time they could be eliminated altogether.

According to the Department for Transport, the government was not permitted to develop digital driving licences whilst under European Union law.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the UK's transport system would move "into the modern age".

New provisional licences will be available by 2024 through the new online portal, although the trial could start as early as next year.
