DVLA tells drivers 'don't panic' as licence applications list revealed amid huge backlog

The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) has confirmed it is processing driving licence applications received over two months ago amid current backlog issues.

The agency said that some of those being processed are renewals from September 9, meaning elderly drivers asking for a renewal or those waiting for a new licence after being disqualified, are facing one of the longest waits.

The government agency are now only looking at applications received from September 10 - two and a half months after being sent off.

In addition to renewals, those applying for a licence with non-UK identity have also struggled with applications from September 24 only being looked at now.

Meanwhile, first-time drivers looking to get their provisional licence have been left waiting with applications from October 4 now being processed.

Despite the backlog, they have warned motorists who sent in applications after these dates to not contact them in panic.

It said: "We are processing paper applications in the order we receive them. If you sent your application after the dates shown above, please do not contact us as it has not been processed yet."

The DVLA also confirmed there were "ongoing delays" with paper applications however also said drivers may face "additional delays" in certain circumstances.

They added: "As a result of ongoing covid safety measures and the impact of previous industrial action by members of the Public and Commercial Services union, there are ongoing delays with processing paper applications.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and our staff are working hard to reduce waiting times.

"There may be additional delays in processing more complex cases, for example, if medical investigations are needed as part of your driving licence application."

Thankfully the list reveals not all DVLA services have been affected by delays.

Applications received from November 18 were being looked at in regards to the sale of vehicles whilst those applying for a replacement logbook have waited just over a week for their applications to be considered.

Applications for vehicle registration changes received from November 15 are also now also being looked at.

Drivers sending in for a vocational driving licence or renewal have also waited less than a month to be looked at.

The DVLA continued: "If you have applied online, your application is already being processed.

"There are no delays with online transactions, so please try to use the online services where possible to avoid a delay with your application."
