DVLA takes pensioner with Parkinson’s to court over £3.34 bill

• An 86-year-old pensioner with Parkinson's disease was convicted over an unpaid car tax bill amounting to just £3.34.
• The annual £20 tax for his silver Ford Fiesta was inadvertently missed in January when his daughter, who manages his finances, was moving house, while his wife also suffers from Alzheimer's.
• The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) launched a criminal prosecution covering a six-week period of untaxed vehicle use.
• He was convicted at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court, ordered to pay £3.34 in compensation to the DVLA, and received an absolute discharge.
• The case was processed through the controversial Single Justice Procedure (SJP), a fast-track court process currently under government review due to concerns about vulnerable people being harshly convicted.
