Dutch police on hunt for Irish who are 'rogue handymen' after older victims targeted by scam

Irish 'rogue handymen' have been targeting elderly and vulnerable Dutch victims, with police now on the lookout.

That's according to reports from local media in the Netherlands, who say that officers in Landsmeer are particularly interested in a white van with red and yellow stripes on the back.

According to a resident, who was speaking to Dutch media, the "handymen" have only arrived in Landsmeer recently.

They ring someone's doorbell with the offer for a simple job at home like trimming the hedges or spraying down the driveway. They then allegedly find something urgently wrong with the house or dwelling that they could fix on the spot for a large sum of money.

Two investigations have been undertaken by Dutch police in the past, one in 2017 and another in 2021, where they found that Dutch people had been scammed out of nearly €2,000,000 by the 'handymen', with eight arrests made.

“At least 120 people have become victims of Irish people" they said at the time.

A spokesperson for the Dutch police told local publications: “However, there is certainly talk of mobile banditry, or internationally traveling criminal gangs. In a message on Instagram, the police officers released images of a white van with yellow and red stripes on the back with the message ‘don’t go with them’.”

"We cannot warn enough about this,” said the police spokesman. “We want to find these 'handymen' and start the conversation"
