The Red Bull star put aside practice issues caused by gearbox problems to pip rival Charles Leclerc to top spot by 0.021 seconds on Saturday.

A ninth win in 14 races at the Belgian GP last weekend, where he quickly fought back from starting 14th on the grid to ease to yet another comfortable triumph, saw the dominant Verstappen move 93 points clear of Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez in the drivers’ standings, with Ferrari’s luckless Leclerc languishing third after a sixth-place finish at Spa.
Verstappen suffered a hiccup as he broke down in the first practice session on Friday and was only eighth-fastest after returning for FP2, with Leclerc leading Carlos Sainz in a Scuderia one-two.
Also on Friday, Oscar Piastri was officially confirmed as fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement at McLaren for 2023 after the team won their legal fight with Alpine.
