Dutch FA make groundbreaking decision that will worry Leeds United and Liverpool

Dutch giants Ajax have been denied the Eredivisie title after it was confirmed there would be no 2019/20 league champions in the Netherlands.

Last season's Champions League semi-finalists lead the table on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar with nine league matches left to be played.

However, whilst some leagues have opted to cancel their leagues and freeze the league table, Ajax have been told they will not be crowned champions.

This sets a bad precedent for English clubs such as Leeds United, who are top of the Championship table and hopeful of a return to the Premier League, and Liverpool who are on course to secure their first league title in 30 years.

Equally, ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk, who currently reside in the Eredivisie relegation zone, will not be relegated from the top-tier of Dutch football, which could come as welcome news to Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City.

This is the first example in European football of these decisions being taken, with Belgian football opting to end their season but award runaway league-leaders Club Brugge the title.

The Premier League and EFL remain committed to completing the 2019/20 season.

UEFA have also again this week reiterated their intention to finish the Champions League and Europa League.
