A Dutch court has ruled that the Dutch government has consistently prioritized the interests of the aviation sector over those of residents living near Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs. The court deemed this treatment a violation of Europe's human rights convention, emphasizing the need to address noise pollution concerns.

The court's decision marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of noise pollution and disturbances caused by the airport located on the outskirts of Amsterdam. The ruling mandates authorities to take concrete steps to curb noise pollution and provide legal protection for individuals affected by air traffic noise within a year.

According to the national public health institute, approximately 259,000 people in the Netherlands endure significant nuisance from aircraft flying over the densely populated country. The organization behind the case, The Right to Protection from Aircraft Nuisance, expressed satisfaction with the court's ruling, highlighting the need to prioritize the well-being of local residents over economic interests.

In response to the ruling, the Ministry for Infrastructure and Water acknowledged the government's commitment to addressing noise pollution concerns and pledged to review the verdict. Schiphol Airport also affirmed its dedication to reducing noise pollution, outlining measures such as potential nighttime closures and restrictions on noisy aircraft to alleviate the impact on residents.

While striving to maintain connectivity with the world, Schiphol emphasized the importance of balancing aviation needs with the well-being of local communities. The airport's statement underscored the significance of clear legislation to guide both residents and the aviation sector in achieving a quieter and cleaner environment.
