Dutch coach admits Leeds United youngster has put teammates 'on edge' after U21 audition

Leeds United's players have jetted off to various destinations over the past week or so as November's international break commenced.

There were maiden call-ups at various age groups for a selected number of Leeds United U23s and those currently bridging the gap between the first-team and the youth setup at Thorp Arch.

Charlie Cresswell made a first England U21 appearance as the Three Lions' understudies defeated the Czech Republic 3-1 at Turf Moor.

Summer signing Leo Hjelde also made his Norway U21 bow alongside goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson.

Crysencio Summerville featured twice for Jong Oranje - the Netherlands' U21 side - coming off the bench in a victory over Bulgaria to make his debut for that age group, before starting the following fixture against Gibraltar.

The Dutch saw off the UEFA minnows 7-0, with Summerville opening the scoring on the day.

After the match, Dutch U21 head coach Erwin van de Looi spoke about his team's emphatic victory, as well as the new faces in his squad.

“We didn't play fast enough in the first half. That's the only way to destroy a team like that. We chose to start with three centre forwards: Brian Brobbey, Joshua Zirkzee and Crysencio Summerville. Below that were two tens. That was also necessary to destroy their block with five defenders. That went much better in the second half than in the first half," he told Voetbal International.

Despite the fact Van de Looi seemed dissatisfied with his team's first half performance, he did reserve some praise for the new players in his squad, which includes Summerville.

"I look back on the first months with this group with a good feeling," the head coach said. "You can see that a number of players are developing well and we are also getting stronger across the board. This time we had Wouter Burger, Crysensio Summerville and Micky van de Ven: three new guys. They left a good impression on me.

"This means that the players who were there at the start [of the qualifying cycle] are also put on edge."

Van de Looi's parting comment is particularly interesting and provides a window into the thinking behind his team selection.

If the Leeds United winger has sufficiently impressed, he can expect to start more frequently by the sounds of his manager's comments.

For the time being though, Summerville remains on two U21 caps. The Netherlands currently top their qualifying group for the U21 European Championships in Romania and Georgia which will take place during 2023.
