Dutch club plot legal action that could have major implications for Leeds United and Liverpool

Leeds United and their fans are still waiting to find out when the Championship season will return.

All football in England was cancelled at the beginning of March following the coronavirus outbreak.

And there is no end in sight yet, with no set date for the 2019/20 season to return to action and be completed.

There is a belief among clubs that the season will resume and be finished, rather than being declared null and void, like has happened in non-league and some European countries already.

The Whites have a vested interest, topping the Championship table and are keen to complete the season and earn promotion to the Premier League.

One of Europe's biggest leagues made a huge decision this week to call off the campaign.

The Eredivisie in the Netherlands announced that it had called a halt to the season entirely, with no promotion or relegation and Ajax crowned champions, with AZ Alkmaar going into the Champions League play-offs.

And if England was to follow suit, that would be bad news for Leeds, with their impressive campaign under Marcelo Bielsa counting for nothing.

However, it has emerged that one Dutch side is preparing for legal proceedings against the KNVB - Dutch football's governing body - with more clubs preparing to follow suit.

FC Utrecht were sixth in the table prior to the suspension, three points off a Europa League spot with a game in hand on the team above them.

And according to the Associated Press, Utrecht owner Frans van Seumeren told local broadcaster RTV Utrecht on Friday night that his club will “use all the lawyers we can” in a bid to overturn the decision.

The legal proceedings will be keenly watched by the likes of Leeds United given the English FA could decide to follow the same path if there is no end to the COVID-19 problems in sight.
