Dustin the Turkey responds to whiny Niall Horan fans after The Den criticism

Dustin the Turkey has responded to criticism from Niall Horan fans who blasted the puppet following last Friday's Comic Relief TV special.

The former One Direction star fulfilled a childhood dream by performing on The Den's Talent on the Telly - a sketch that was aired on RTE as part of the charity programme.

The Mullingar man submitted an acoustic version of his song Black and White.

But Dustin, who was hosting the reunion skit alongside Ray D'Arcy, ruffled a few feathers when he joked towards the end of the video: "We wanted Harry Styles. You're only getting a minute and a half."

The Irish singer's fans from across the pond did not see the funny side of it and slammed Dustin for being "disrespectful" towards the 26-year-old hitmaker.

Twitter page Niall Updates shared a 10 second snippet of the skit - which has been viewed more than 1.2million times.

Their post said: "What they did to Niall was extremely disrespectful and rude.

"He didn’t have to sing for them either and interrupting him saying they wanted Harry instead is so uncalled for.

"Harry would not singing for your crusty asses anyways!"

Another angry fan replied: "Someone hold me before I go and punch them straight up in the face."

Niall Updates added that it was "gross" and called on RTE to show respect to Niall Horan.

However, Dustin has broken his silence following the uproar to insist he's a lover of Niall Horan, Americans and the craic.

He posted on Twitter: "I’m a lover* not a fighter... *Just ask @KimKardashian."

Some Irish social media users were quick to explain the situation to Horan's US followers and told disgruntled fans to "cop on".

Niall Updates later issued a response to the clarifications and apologised to the "Irish community".

One post said: "I am not Irish, I am Mexican American so I did not know that getting “roasted” from this Dustin the turkey is considered an honor.

"I never said to cancel the show. I just didn’t like the joke.

"We all have different opinions and that’s fine. I’m sorry if I offended the Irish community. That wasn’t my intention."

The page added: "All of Ireland hates me now."
