Dustin Poirier not interested in fighting teammates: ‘I don’t sell out like (expletive) Colby Covington’

Dustin Poirier doesn’t have any interest in a fight against the winner of the upcoming “BMF title” matchup at UFC 244.

Why? It might mean Poirier (25-6 MMA, 17-5 UFC) would have to square off with longtime training partner Jorge Masvidal (34-13 MMA, 11-6 UFC).

Unlike some of his other teammates, Poirier said, he is less interested in money and more interested in staying loyal to those around him.

At the UFC 242 post-fight news conference, Poirier was asked about a potential Diaz or Masvidal matchup. His answer criticized someone he considers disloyal, former UFC interim welterweight champ Colby Covington.

“I don’t sell out like (expletive) Colby Covington and talk bad about people that I roll with,” Poirier said. “No, Jorge is a buddy of mine and I won’t fight him.”

In fact, Poirier said he plans on making the trip to Florida to train with Masvidal in preparation for his five-round UFC 244 headliner.

“He’s a training partner (and) he’s a good guy,” Poirier said. “If anything, I’ll go out to Florida and help him for that fight.”

Both Masvidal and Covington (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) are currently atop the UFC’s welterweight divisional rankings. When a bout between champion Kamaru Usman and Covington began to seemingly go by the wayside, Masvidal and Usman (15-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC) exchanged words on social media.

After a few back-and-fourths, Masvidal quickly turned his attention to former title challenger Nate Diaz. Following a tweet by Masvidal directed at Diaz (20-11 MMA, 15-9 UFC), “Chaos” Covington interjected himself into the conversation.

Once friends, the waters are murky regarding the current relationship between former training partners Masvidal and Covington. In a tweet on Friday, Covington called Masvidal a “journeyman” and a “trash bag.”
