Dustin Poirier: ‘My mistake’ taking Conor McGregor donation details public

Dustin Poirier has offered a mea culpa regarding his recent Twitter spat with Conor McGregor.

Earlier this week, Poirier responded McGregor’s trilogy fight prediction by letting it be known that McGregor had yet to keep his word on making a $500,000 donation to The Good Fight Foundation. According to Poirier, McGregor’s team simply stopped replying to communication attempts regarding the money that McGregor pledged to donate prior to their rematch at UFC 257.

In the wake of this, McGregor became irate at Poirier for “smearing” his name and threatened to cancel their UFC 264 fight. On Wednesday, Poirier issued a statement in which he admitted wrong doing.

“I am very passionate about my charity as you all know. I jumped the gun and took private matters between Conor (and) my foundation public. My mistake, we live, we learn,” Poirier tweeted. “Spreading positivity (and) doing good is my goal! I feel like I have brought a negative energy and personal opinions into something I am working so hard on that gives people a reason to cheer and smile. I will take this in stride and continue to fight the Good Fight.”

Despite McGregor’s threat to withdraw prior to Poirier’s statement, the UFC on Wednesday morning announced that their July 10 headliner will take place at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena in front of fans.

Poirier (27-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) and McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) will enter their trilogy tied at one apiece. McGregor won their first fight, at featherweight, by first-round TKO in 2014. Poirier got that one back in the rematch this past January, scoring a second-round TKO of McGregor.
