Dustin Poirier includes Conor McGregor on shortlist of potential opponents

Dustin Poirier has been on the hunt for his next fight for several months and admits Conor McGregor is on the list of potential opponents.

Poirier has been left frustrated by the UFC's failure to book him a fight since he lost to Charles Oliveira last December. 'The Diamond' is preparing to move up to 170lb, like McGregor, but admits he would be open to facing the Irishman at lightweight as well.

When asked if McGregor is a potential opponent, Poirier said on The MMA Hour : "That’s tough to say. You never know. I’ll fight him at 155 or 170 though, if he does come back and wants to fight. Yeah, he’s in it too."

Poirier admitted that although a fourth fight with McGregor could take place, neither the Irishman's team nor the UFC have reached out to him about it. Poirier was beaten by McGregor in 2014 but stopped him twice last year, with 'Notorious' suffering a horror leg break in their trilogy bout.

Eager to get back in the cage, Poirier continued: “I’ll fight [Michael] Chandler. I’ll fight [Justin] Gaethje. If Tony [Ferguson] wins a fight and comes back down to 155, I’ll fight Tony. Whoever’s in the line, dude. I’ll fight anybody, anyone… anyone that makes sense.”

Poirier's loss to Oliveira marks the second time he's missed out on the lightweight title having previously tapping out against the now-retired Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019. Poirier is still the No.2 contender at lightweight, right behind Oliveira as the Brazilian was recently stripped of his belt.

Another potential opponent for Poirier is Chandler, who brutally knocked out Ferguson at UFC 274 earlier this month. Chandler says he has no interest in fighting Poirier as he felt "pushed aside" by the former interim champion when he signed for the UFC last year.

Poirier has since responded to Chandler, stating: "He’s never beaten anybody coming off a win in the UFC. He’s been dropped in his last three fights. What are Dan Hooker’s last five fights and what are Tony Ferguson’s last five fights? The two guys he beat in the UFC. What are their records in their last fights?

"I’m not talking trash, I’m stating facts. It’s whatever, bro. I’ll fight him, too. I don’t care anymore. Just book me something. Somebody’s gonna get sparked out, let’s go.” You think the guy forgot about me? The route to the title shot?"
