Dustin Johnson leads at PGA Championship with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry off the pace

Dustin Johnson produced a stunning five-under par 65 to surge into the solo lead in the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park last night.

Johnson holds a one-stroke lead over his countrymen Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Champ. Both are vying for their first major title, while Scheffler is also eyeing his first win at a PGA Tour event.

Johnson, 36, who is playing in his 13th season on the PGA Tour, won the 2016 US Open and has finished second or tied for second at all three other majors. The former world number one has also notched 21 PGA Tour victories.

"I've been in contention a lot, and I've got it done a lot of times," he told reporters. "Tomorrow, it's no different. I'm going to have to play good golf if I want to win."

But lurking two strokes back of Johnson is his pal Brooks Koepka, a four-time major winner who saves his best golf for the biggest stages, and was brimming with confidence after his round of one-under-par 69 on Saturday.

Johnson said the key was to stay focused on his game and not get distracted by watching the leaderboard at the event.

"All I can do is go out and play my game and shoot the best number I can. I'm going to just try and go out and shoot as low as I can tomorrow just like I did today," he said.

"It doesn't really matter what other guys are doing. All I can control is myself."

Koepka, meanwhile, is in bullish mood heading into the final round.

He said: "A lot of the guys on the leaderboard haven't won," he told CBS Sports in an interview.

"I guess DJ has only won one," he said, referring to Johnson, whose lone major championship came at the 2016 U.S. Open.

"I don't know the other guys who are up there."

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy had their moments on Thursday and Friday but have faded out of contention going into the final round.

Open champion Lowry is eight shots behind leader Johnson on -1 after rounds of 68,72 and 69.

It's been an up-and-down tournament so far for McIlroy, who finds himself level-par after three rounds - his hunt for an elusive fifth major title set to continue.

Bulked-up Bryson DeChambeau is level with fierce rival Koepka at -7 and two off the pace set by Johnson.
