Dusit Zoo fate mulled

The Zoological Park Organisation (ZPO) board will on Tuesday discuss the future of Dusit Zoo and whether it will be moved to a new site in Pathum Thani province.

A clear decision will be made after the meeting, Suriya Saengpong, deputy director-general of the Zoological Park Organisation, said yesterday.

Dusit Zoo earlier this week dismissed rumours it has immediate plans to close amid claims it will relocate to Pathum Thani to a 300 rai plot of land granted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment by His Majesty the King for the construction of a zoo.

According to a royal news report last month, His Majesty the King gave nine land plots to government agencies to be used for public services.

Among these plots, His Majesty granted 300 rai of land in Klong 6, Thanya Buri district of Pathum Thani to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for construction of a new zoo and headquarters of the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand.

However, the stipulation is that if a zoo is to be constructed, it must be constructed using a "green zoo" concept, Mr Suriya said.

As part of this animal welfare would be a prime concern, with enclosure designs based on each animal’s natural habitat, avoiding buildings that don't look natural. More space would also be provided for animals.
