Durham Women captain Wilson proud of her side’s heart in Conti Cup defeat

Defender Sarah Wilson was disappointed as Durham Women exited the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup but proud of how her side responded in the second half.

Against top-flight opposition, the FA Women’s Championship side were undone just before the break when West Ham scored two goals in three minutes.

Emily van Egmond and Katerina Svitkova scored for the Hammers to put them in a comfortable position while Hawa Cissoko added another to seal the result late on.

And the Durham skipper acknowledged a lack of concentration let West Ham get the upper hand in their first loss of the season.

“We can take a lot of heart from that, especially the second-half performance,” said Wilson.

“We’re a little bit disappointed with the first half because we had a crazy five minutes where we switched off, and against the bigger teams you can’t do that.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t our night.”

The Wildcats had chances in the match through Sarah Robson’s curling effort and Bridget Galloway’s strike tested the Hammers.

But despite Durham not being able to find the back of the net, Wildcats captain Wilson was proud of how her team played in the second half.

Wilson added: “The second half was absolutely brilliant. We made some changes and changed our shape and we got forward.

“We created and we really made it difficult for them, we’re really proud of each other and how we responded.

“I was doing a little bit of reading and the striker I was playing up against had 97 caps for Australia.

“It’s good to test yourself against those players, put yourself up against them and see how you can compete.”
