The final was a rematch of the first round when the two sides first met, which Durham also won that with 195 points to 185 points.

Durham University last won the competition 23 years ago in 2000, with their victory in 1977.

Writing on social media, a spokesman for the university said: "Congratulations to our #UniversityChallenge winning team! Harry Scully, Bea Bennett, Alex Radcliffe, Chloe Margaux and Tom Haines-Matos, with Badger, the cathedral cat. We’re so proud of you. Well done to @BristolUni, worthy opponents in their first ever final."

The final was also host Jeremy Paxman's final episode after he announced he would be stepping down a year ago.

The broadcaster has been at the helm of the show since it was revived in 1994 and has seen him become the longest-serving quizmaster on British TV.

He closed his stint on the show by saying: "So it's goodnight from me."
