Durham University cancels classroom teaching due to coronavirus fears

Durham University is cancelling classroom teaching due to the coronavirus crisis.

Students have been told that all classroom teaching will "cease" from Monday, March 16 until the end of term on March 20.

The university says it will remain open but alternative modes of teaching should be used by all instructors.

The institute states: "We are advising students that if they wish to leave Durham following their last class on Friday, March 13, they can do so, and participate in classes remotely for the final week of term.

"From Monday, March 16, we are encouraging colleagues to explore remote working options with their managers.

"Colleagues who are most at risk from the coronavirus will be asked to work from home whenever possible and will enable them to do so."

It is the latest step taken by the university after it cancelled all student field trips outside the UK due to the ongoing spread of the virus

The university also advised that students on placement in Italy should return home and that large scale conferences and events should be cancelled.

Durham's Holi Festival celebrations, which were due to take place on Saturday, were also cancelled.

The decision came after the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in County Durham, with 12 confirmed cases in the North East as of Wednesday afternoon.
