Durham teen behind bars after police discovered drugs during routine traffic stop

A teenage driver has been locked up after police discovered MDMA in his car during a routine traffic stop in County Durham.

Jack Stevens, 19, was pulled over in his Ford Fiesta on the A181 in Wingate, Durham, after traffic officers became concerned about the manner of his driving.

While officers searched his vehicle, they found just under 20g of white powder and a green tablet, which was later tested in a laboratory and found to be MDMA.

MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, is a Class A substance.

Stevens, of Shotton Colliery, was arrested and later charged with possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and appeared at Durham Crown Court where he was sentenced to 32 months in a young offenders’ institute and ordered to pay a £181 victim surcharge.

PC Simpson, from Durham Constabulary, said: "Stevens was initially stopped as his manner of driving was suspicious, and a full search of his car then resulted in a number of snap seal bags of MDMA being found.

"Illegal and potentially dangerous drugs such as MDMA are not welcome in County Durham and Darlington and we will take action to take these drugs off our streets."
