Durham sculpture targeted by vandals undergoes restoration work

A sculpture marking the founding of a city has been restored after becoming a target for vandals.

The Journey, which can be found at Millennium Place, illustrates the story of the foundation of Durham and was created by South Moor artist, Fenwick Lawson.

But, the artwork has become a target for anti-social behaviour due to its close proximity to pubs and clubs.

The sculpture, which depicts the body of St Cuthbert being carried by a group of monks to his final resting place in 995AD in Durham city, has now undergone a full refurbishment.

The renovation included the installation of ambient lighting and a new bronze interpretation board.

Using money, originally raised by the people of Durham, entrusted to The Journey Charity and with the support of the trustees, the artist's family and Durham County Council, the refurbishment was able to take place.

Cllr Joy Allen, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism, said: “Thanks to the tireless work of the charity trustees, these much-needed improvements will hopefully prevent any further vandalism to this celebrated sculpture.

“Along with the new interpretation board and lights, the celebration event will hopefully raise the profile of this often-overlooked but important public art piece.”

The enhancements to The Journey come when 2020 has been designated as Durham’s Year of Pilgrimage, at the centre of which will be the launch of the Northern Saints Trails in spring, a series of six walking trails which tell the fascinating stories of the Northern Saints.
