Durham's new Cosy Club is set to launch with summer cocktails, tapas and a warm welcome

A new restaurant-bar opening in Durham aims to serve up a touch of nostalgia and elegance while catering for contemporary tastes.

Cosy Club will launch this July on The Riverwalk with a series of cocktail and tapas deals to ensure its first customers can make the most of summer at its prime riverside location.

Its position overlooking the river forms part of the area's redevelopment where new leisure attractions include the now-open cinema.

And it aims to add its own individual look with a spokesman saying: "think aristocratic abundance with a dash of local village cricket pavilion pottiness".

Finishing touches are currently being made to the venue in readiness for its opening day on July 16, while a sneak peek at its all-day family-friendly menus reveals a number of deals which are set to appeal to customers and also make a point of including older people in need of a bit of company.

Besides catering for all appetites - from salads to comfort food dishes - and including gluten-free and vegan options, Cosy Club will be hosting 'free teas for those in need' every Wednesday when, in a move to help fight loneliness, guests will be offered a free pot of tea between 10am and 11am.

And, once up and running, the business also will be donating funds from the sale of each coffee and burger to the charity Independent Age which offers friendship services and living advice to older people and their families.

Various upcoming deals will be on offer during the week, including a weekday morning Breakfast Club offering any brunch item and hot drink for £8.25 and a Teatime Tipple with any two cocktails available for £9.95 from Sunday to Thursday between 4pm-8pm.

Other post-5pm deals include Marvellous Mondays, featuring a  free drink with any main meal, and Tremendous Tuesdays offering any three tapas dishes and a glass of wine for £13.95.

Amber Wood, managing director for the brand, said the company is looking forward to bringing "delicious food and quirky style" to Durham.

"At Cosy Club, we serve up a sense of being somewhere special with a hint of nostalgia," he said.

"From a lazy breakfast to family lunch or a night out in your glad rags, we’re set apart by the character of our team, elegance of our design and quality of our food and drink."

The venue, which is also creating 40 jobs for local people, is the latest addition to Clearbell Capital's £30m redevelopment around The Gates shopping centre and follows the recent opening of the Odeon Luxe cinema.

Nick Berry, a partner at Clearbell Capital, said: “This is another exciting milestone for The Riverwalk as our vision to create a new destination in  Durham  comes to fruition."
