Durham Police say 'no crime' took place at St Cuthbert's church which was cordoned off on Saturday

Police have confirmed no crime appears to have taken place at a parish church which was cordoned off on Saturday.

St Cuthbert's Church, on North Road, in Durham , was cordoned off for much of the afternoon, sparking local concern.

Police were sent to investigate the area after receiving a report, the details of which are unknown, and a police officer was seen standing guard at the entrance to the grounds.

But they now say no criminal activity appears to have taken place at the church.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "We did go to that location, we did investigate the scene which looked suspicious at the time, but we've investigated and we can confirm no crime has taken place."
