Durham Miners' Association hits back at Countdown's Rachel Riley's 'damaging' tweet

A row has erupted between the Durham Miners' Association and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley.

Rachel, who is often outspoken about anti-Semitism within the Labour party, had slammed a brass band for playing the traditional Jewish song Hava Negila at the Durham Miners' Gala on Saturday.

The TV presenter, who has Jewish heritage, tweeted that it was "as tasteful as showing Black Panther at a Klan rally."

The Miners' Association hit back on Monday telling Rachel that her tweet was "damaging" and had hurt people.

They said: "Dear RachelRileyRR , Your damaging comments regarding one of our community brass bands have caused great hurt to good people. Hava Negila has been played at the DurhamGala by many bands over many years.

"We invite you to Durham to meet and learn from the men, women and children who play in brass bands, celebrating their own culture alongside music from around the world. Your invitation’s in the post."

Other Twitter users disagreed with the mum-to-be's tweet with one adding: "This is heartbreaking - as the proud son of a Durham Miner - I’m now a racist anti-Semite? One of the most ill-considered tweets I’ve seen in a long time. And I’ve seen a lot. This should really be deleted immediately."

Another said: "Perhaps some of the members of the band are Jewish and are celebrating their traditions."

And another added: "I’m speechless at how completely offensive it is to equate Durham Gala to the KKK."

Rachel has yet to respond to the Durham Miners' Association's tweet.
