Durham Free School site school could be transformed into 60 home estate

Dozens of homes could be built on the site of a former Durham city school.

Chapter Homes has lodged proposals to build 60 houses on land that was once home to Gilesgate Sports College and then Durham Free School.

The college closed, on Bradford Crescent, in 2013 following a drop in pupil numbers and council budget cuts.

Christian academy The Durham Free School then opened in the building but closed just 18 months later, with building later demolished.

Under the plans, the housing would be a mixture of two, three and four bedroom properties.

Six of the houses would be semi detached bungalows for elderly people and 25% of the units would be affordable.

In a planning statement to Durham County Council, it states: "The proposed scheme seeks approval for the development of the site to provide a total of 60 new dwellings.

"A mix of accommodation will be provided across the site including 15 affordable dwellings.

"The proposed scheme has been carefully considered to provide a range of accommodation with access and public open space integrated within the overall vision for the site.

"The overall development has been carefully designed to provide a high-quality scheme that is appropriate in scale, density, mix of accommodation and responds to the need of the local area."

Belmont Parish Council planning committee will be holding a public meeting on August 29 to discuss the application.

The meeting will take place at 5.30pm in Belmont Community Centre.
