Durham foodbank plays starring role in Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little TV show

A County Durham foodbank has played a starring role in new hit TV show alongside Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little

East Durham Foodbank in Peterlee, County Durham, was chosen as a highlight for the show - Ricky and Ralf's Very Northern Road Trip.

The show on UKGold sees the Royle Family's dad and son reunite years after they last got together, for a heart-warming and hilarious staycation, travelling the length and breadth of northern England.

In this week's episode, the pair visited the North East to visit several of the region's landmarks and foodbank heroes.

Ricky and Ralf take their campervan to visit the trust to watch and help out the trust new project, The People's Takeaway. The People's Takeaway is when volunteers prepare and deliver takeaway food.

After learning about the project, the two men rolled up their sleeves to help out volunteers with making two pizzas and delivered them to the families.

Malcolm Fallow, Chief Executive of the Trust said: "Ricky has been a good friend to East Durham Trust. Last year he came and opened the extension of the foodbank. The People's takeaway started two/ three years ago and we've been providing takeaways meals to families every since.

"There's a feel for community spirits here in North East, everyone looking out for one another. "

The duo also visit the Beamish Museum where they spoke to staff and learned about the coal mines and the National Glass Centre in Sunderland where Ralf created a Christmas bauble from scratch.

Keith Merrin, Director of National Glass Centre said: "It was great to welcome Ricky and Ralf to National Glass Centre and into our Hot Glass Studio. They were really good fun and as you can imagine, a great laugh.

"Our glassblowers Ian and Matt made one of our most popular public activities with Ralf, a Christmas bauble. Ricky, however, seemed to think he didn't have enough puff in him!

"It was nice to see such an iconic duo together again celebrating the fantastic things the North has to offer. If you missed the episode or the series so far, it's definitely worth catching up."

You can watch the new episode on UKTV Gold this Friday at 11pm.
