Durham County Cricket Club admits it failed to ensure fans' safety following collapse of stand during England T20 match

Durham County Cricket Club has confirmed its lawyers have pleaded guilty to a single charge after three people were injured during an England T20 match.

The incident occurred during a match between England and the West Indies at the Emirates Riverside ground in Chester-le-Street in September 2017.

At the time the club confirmed three spectators were injured during the course of the second inning after falling on unstable flooring in the North East Terrace.

Stewards and police were seen evacuating spectators from the affected area as a precautionary measure.

The stand was said to have passed inspections in the week before the match.

Pictures on social media at the time showed a hole had appeared in the stand during the game. One of the three injured fans had to be taken to the RVI hospital in Newcastle by ambulance.

A court case was heard at Teesside Crown Court on October 12, with a lawyer acting for the club pleading guilty to a single charge of failing to ensure the health and safety of spectators and people not in its employment.

However, a number of other charges against both the club and officials were dropped after the prosecution offered no evidence.

A sentencing hearing will take place on November 12, also at Teesside Crown Court.
