Durham Cathedral launches Pancake Pilgrimage challenge for some flipping good fun

Families are being urged to take part in a Pancake Pilgrimage this week to mark Shrove Tuesday.

Durham Cathedral's virtual challenge involves walking - or running - 995 steps while flipping a pancake - and the idea is that collective efforts will make up the 7.7-mile route between Chester le Street and the Durham landmark.

This distance - around 16,260 steps - is what was covered by the journey bringing St Cuthbert's coffin to its final resting plact at the cathedral.

The number of steps in the challenge, which is running until Friday, relates to the year - 995 - that building first started on Durham Cathedral but it says 'any distance you cover will be counted towards the total'.

And those who join in what might turn out to be quite a messy challenge could also help to raise funds for the cathedral at the same time by asking friends and family to sponsor them.

To take part and have their contribution counted towards the total distance, walkers just need to send a video, shot in landscape, of themselves doing the challenge by the deadline of noon on February 19.

They should add their name, step-count or distance and send it to the cathedral by uploading it - see details here - or emailing it to marketing@durhamcathedral.co.uk

The cathedral then will release a video compilation later that day showing all the supporters' efforts.

Anyone who can help by raising sponsorship can do so using Durham Cathedral's Just Giving page. Donations also can be made here.

All funds raised will be used to help the cathedral and the community to recover from the impact of Covid-19.

Durham Cathedral is currently open 11am-2pm each day for private prayer and limited private worship. It is also running online services which this week, to mark the start of Lent, will include a Sung Eucharist on Ash Wednesday to be broadcast on its Youtube channel and Facebook page at 5.15pm.
