Durham Cathedral cancels all events for three months and suspends public worship due to coronavirus

Durham Cathedral has suspended public worship and cancelled all events for three months.

Public events, gatherings and groups tours, have all been halted due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The cathedral will remain open for prayer and quiet reflection.

On Friday, visitors were going to be given the chance to see the landmark as part of its 'Cathedrals at Night' event, but this has been called-off.

In a statement on the cathedral's website, it states: "We are continuing to develop digital resources to help people take part in cathedral worship from home.

"There is signage placed around the church, based on official NHS guidance on how best to protect yourself during this period of heightened awareness.

"We have taken steps to increase the frequency with which we clean regularly touched surfaces in the cathedral.

"We are responding in line with national guidance from Public Health England, the World Health Organisation and the Church of England, and will continue to do so as the situation develops."

Anyone who has booked a ticket for an event that is now postponed or cancelled, will be contacted in due course to arrange a refund.
