Durham camper van driver hurt two women by deliberately driving into oncoming traffic during row

A drunk camper van driver caused a head-on collision by deliberately driving into oncoming traffic in a "fit of rage" during a row with his partner.

Bradley Smith was more than twice the drink drive limit and 11 times the cocaine limit after staying up all night with Jessica Spurr during a camping trip.

In the morning, they argued and on the drive home the row escalated, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

As he drove through County Durham, Smith told Miss Spurr: "I'm going to kill you, in fact I'm going to kill us both".

He then deliberately drove onto the wrong side of the road, into the path of Julie Douthwaite's Nissan Juke.

She braked but did not have time to avoid a head-on crash which left her and Miss Spurr seriously injured.

Mrs Douthwaite suffered a fractured sternum, a lesion to her liver and extensive bruising, while Miss Spurr had to be put in a medically induced coma due to a head injury.

Now Smith, 36, who admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving on Mrs Douthwaite, wounding to Miss Spurr and assaulting a police officer at the scene, has been jailed for three years and nine months.

The court heard it was on January 11 this year that Smith and Miss Spurr went on a trip to Weardale in his Fiat Ducato van, which had been converted into a camper van.

He consumed vodka, beer and cocaine and they stayed up all night.

It was shortly before 9am the next morning, on the A688 at Keverstone Bank, Staindrop, near Barnard Castle, County Durham, that the crash happened.

Dan Cordey, prosecuting, said: "He deliberately drove on the opposite side of the road into traffic approaching him.

"Miss Spurr said she could see the oncoming Nissan Juke and she said she tried to lean across to steer the van away from the oncoming car.

"Miss Douthwaite said she only had seconds to brace for impact. She braked and slowed down before the head-on collision occurred.

"She had no time to avoid the collision. Her car was wholly on her side of the road, she was sober and driving perfectly properly, going about her business."

Tests showed Smith was two-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit and the amount of cocaine in his system was 11 times the drug driving limit.

When the emergency services turned up, he was seen trying to cut his wrist with a wood saw.

He resisted arrest and then when sitting on a verge to be assessed by paramedics, he violently swung his head back, hitting a police officer's leg. He heard a crack and felt intense pain. While his knee was not broken, it was severely swollen, bruised and painful.

Miss Douthwaite later went to hospital where her injuries were discovered.

She said in a victim impact statement she had to have several weeks off work, was left out of pocket, her car was written off and she had to buy a new one and she and her husband had to dip into their savings to cover day-to-day expenses.

Mrs Douthwaite added: "I feel I've been punished for something out of my control.

"I still have to use painkillers from time to time due to aches and pains I didn't have before this."

Miss Spurr suffered a head injury, cuts and bruises to her face and a laceration and ligament damage to her leg. She was put in a coma but had no fractures.

As well as the prison sentence, Smith, of Gregson Terrace, Seaham, County Durham, will be banned from driving for two years after his release.

Paul Abrahams, defending, said he did it in a "fit of rage".
