Durga Puja to go global on Saraswati Puja

KOLKATA: UK’s Bengali diaspora will launch a campaign to create a global tourism interest in Bengal’s Durga Puja at their Saraswati Puja in London. Durga Puja has already bagged Unesco’s heritage tag.

“As the adage goes ... ‘Bangalir baro mashe tero parbon”’ (Bengalis celebrate 13 festivals in 12 months), the festivities start with Saraswati Puja. We have chosen this occasion to promote Bengal’s Durga Puja as a world tourism destination,” said Anirban Mukhopadhyay, founder-director of Heritage Bengal Global (HBG), a London-based non-profit organization.

Using Saraswati Puja as a platform, HBG will launch a series of upcoming events, the first being an exhibition of photographs of top Kolkata Pujas. This will travel to various venues across the UK, Europe and Japan. Bhowanipur 75 Palli has provided posters which will be circulated among foreign tourists.

The event at Harrow’s Zoroastrian Centre will have representatives of several Asian and non-Bengali communities attending.
