Duran Duran's Wild Boys heyday from banned 'Girls on Film' video to drug abuse

Duran Duran were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s after selling over 100 million records worldwide.

The original band members - made up of singer Simon Le Bon, bassist John Taylor, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist Andy Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor – rose to fame after forming in 1980.

Not only did they manage to smash the charts, but their style heavily influenced the fashion choices of most young adults at the time.

But it appears their time in the spotlight wasn't without some pretty wild moments.

Here, we take a look at some of the most shocking moments during the Wild Boys hitmakers heyday...

Controversial banned music video

In 1981, Duran Duran released their second track, Girls On Film, from their self titled debut album.

The single discusses the exploitation of fashion and pornographic models, while the music video went on to portray themes of nudity, sexual exploitation and abandonment.

As a result, the video was banned by the BBC and heavily edited by MTV.

However, Video 45 released a censored version of the music video in the US in March 1983.

The track went on to win a Grammy Award in 1984 for Best Form Music Video, and currently has over 10 million views on YouTube.

Drug abuse

During the height of their fame, the party-loving rockers dabbled in various illegal substances - including cocaine.

Guitarist Andy previously revealed he first the drug during a performance at Birmingham's Rum Runner club

"I was in a great mood that night," he recalled in his memoir, Wild Boy. "But cocaine certainly didn't figure in my plans."

Sadly, he became hooked from that first hit.

He added: "They say the first time you do cocaine it is so intense that you'll never experience the same thing again, and it's true. You just go bang, and you're immediately overcome with a tidal wave of euphoria and a feeling of overwhelming confidence."

At one point, the band were even able to order drugs on room service from their hotels.

Speaking about the time, Simon said: “You used to be able to order substances on room service, if you knew the right people to ask. Seriously. And we did!

"We partied. We lived the 80s.... and then one more time around.”

However, by the mid-1990s, guitarist John's drug struggles got so back he was forced to seek help in rehab.

The musician has since went sober after turning his life around for the better.

Speaking to Metro in 2011, John said: "I like being sober. I like looking after my body. I had a good run. In many ways, I'm lucky to be alive. I could have checked out a number of times."

Rock star behaviour

Duran Duran weren't known for being the quintessential pop stars.

As well as spending money on lavish shopping trips, the group would also splash out thousands on hotel bills for a weekend.

They once trashed the Hyatt House Hotel on Sunset Strip, putting shampoo in the fountain and throwing cream cakes at guests from the roof.

Speaking in his book, Andy revealed: "We had been boozing it up all day long and someone decided it would be a wheeze to put shampoo in the fountain. It was amazing - there were bubbles billowing everywhere.

"Then we went up to the toff and we could see all these well-heeled guests enjoying a buffet brunch below.

"Before long there were cream cakes raining down on them and I think at one point I actually tipped a bucket of water over someone from our balcony."

He added: "We were just being childish rock stars but it can't have been fun for anyone else in the hotel."

Royal connections

Despite their controversial antics, Princess Diana was known for being a particularly big fan of the '80s icons.

The group met the late mum-of-two on a number of occasions, including the Prince's Trust Rock Gala in 1983.

Speaking at Diana's memorial concert in 2006, singer Simon said: “We are honoured that she always referred to Duran Duran as her favourite band as she was certainly our favourite princess.”

In a scene from Netflix's The Crown, the royal - played by actress Emma Corrin - is also seen with a Duran Duran poster in her bedroom.
