DuPage officials: Stepmom spiked baby bottle with nail polish remover

May 31--A Carol Stream woman has been accused of spiking her toddler stepdaughter's baby bottle with nail polish remover, according to DuPage County authorities.

The 17-month-old girl did not ingest any of the remover, according to DuPage prosecutors, who have charged Andrea Vazquez-Hernandez, 36, with aggravated battery and a misdemeanor count of domestic violence.

The child's father called Carol Stream police Saturday evening to say that earlier that day he had tried to give his daughter her bottle of milk, but the girl immediately spit out the contents. He brought the child to a hospital as a precaution, but she was not affected, prosecutors said.

Police say that their investigation revealed that Vazquez-Hernandez, at a point earlier that day, had poured one inch of the nail polish remover into the bottle.

"The allegations against this defendant are extremely disturbing," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "Thankfully, the young victim in this case did not ingest any of the nail polish remover allegedly supplied by her stepmother."

A statement issued by prosecutors did not explain what may have allegedly motivated the stepmother, who does not have a history of prior arrests in DuPage County, according to court records.

Vazquez-Hernandez, of the 600 block of Hearth Lane, appeared in bond court Tuesday where Judge Jeffrey MacKay set bail at $250,000. Her next appearance is scheduled for June 27 in front of Judge John Kinsella.
