March 03--A Rockford man with a history of convictions and mental health issues went on trial Wednesday in a DuPage County civil proceeding in which authorities want a jury to determine he is "sexually dangerous."
Lawrence Adamczyk, 52, is "the poster child" for sexually dangerous people, First Assistant State's Attorney Joe Ruggiero told jurors, who will decide whether it is likely Adamczyk would commit sex crimes if released. If he is deemed sexually dangerous, he would remain in custody indefinitely.
Adamczyk, Ruggiero said, believes he is in contact with aliens and that he can alter the world through sex acts with adolescent boys.
Adamczyk has been in custody since he was arrested on a burglary count in 2014 at a Roselle high school where police say he illegally entered a locked entrance vestibule and then accosted a 17-year-old student. He was previously arrested at a boys high school swim meet in Brookfield, and has battery convictions for fondling minors at a St. Charles health club and at a Rockford-area mall, according to authorities.
He has been hospitalized a number of times over the last 15 years, Ruggiero said.
"The saddest thing about this is he's in denial. He needs to be treated," Ruggiero said,
Adamczyk, who is representing himself, gave a lengthy opening statement in which he said he was the victim of a "vigilante" criminal justice system.
"If I was a child molester, I'd be locked up." he said.
Adamczyk did admit to having mental illness, and said he had started hearing voices around 2000. He said he crashed his motorcycle into a guardrail around that time at the behest of aliens. But, Adamczyk said, other than a public indecency arrest, which he said was not sexual, he has never committed a sex crime.
"The aliens told me they never would allow me to do that," he said.
Two psychological experts who evaluated him are scheduled to testify at the proceeding, which may go to jurors Friday.
