DUP's Paul Givan tipped to be announced as First Minister

DUP leader Edwin Poots is set to announce his new ministerial team later today.

An announcement is expected later on who will take up the party's Stormont Executive posts.

The appointments will not take effect immediately but new ministers could be in post from next week.

Lagan Valley MLA Paul Givan, a close ally of Mr Poots, has been widely tipped for the role of First Minister.

Mr Poots has previously told of his plans to break with party tradition and not appoint himself as First Minister, instead remaining in charge of the Agriculture portfolio.

The party's other Executive posts are currently held by Economy Minister Diane Dodds, Education Minister Peter Weir and Junior Minister Gordon Lyons.

MLAs including Mervyn Storey, Michelle McIlveen and new deputy leader Paula Bradley are among the names tipped to replace them.

Former party leader Arlene Foster had planned to stand down as First Minister at the end this month, but has said she will resign immediately if Mr Poots changes the current ministerial team.

When Mrs Foster resigns, current Sinn Fein Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill is automatically removed from post due to the nature of their joint office.

Both parties will then have seven days to re-nominate to each position. If either declines to re-nominate, it could trigger Stormont's collapse and a snap election.

There has been speculation Sinn Féin could use the nomination procedure to seek assurances from Mr Poots on Irish language legislation pledges in the 'New Decade, New Approach' deal last year which restored power-sharing.

The DUP has been bitterly divided following the ousting of Mrs Foster as leader and the subsequent narrow election victory by Mr Poots.

Last week the new DUP leader denied delaying an expected announcement on a ministerial reshuffle due to the internal party rift.

He said he would not be "pushed into doing it, nor be held back from doing it" and an announcement would follow "in a number of days, when I'm ready".
