DUP's Gordon Lyons replaces Paul Frew as Economy Minister

Gordon Lyons has been appointed as Stormont's Economy Minister, DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has announced.

The East Antrim MLA replaces Paul Frew only a month after he was appointed by former party leader Edwin Poots, who continues as Agriculture Minister.

Paul Givan remains as First Minister and Michelle McIlveen continues as Education Minister following their appointment last month.

The DUP has faced months of upheaval following successive revolts against Arlene Foster as party leader and her successor Mr Poots, who quit just three weeks into the job.

Sir Jeffrey, who last week became the DUP's new leader, paid tribute to Mr Frew for his "dedicated" work as Economy Minister.

He said Mr Lyons is "well equipped to take on the role and brings with him valuable experience", having previously been a Junior Minister and temporary Agriculture Minister.

The DUP leader said he intends to conduct a "more fundamental" reshuffle of posts in September.

Mr Frew, an MLA for North Antrim, was Mr Poots' campaign manager during the DUP leadership contest in May which saw him narrowly defeat rival Sir Jeffrey.

At a meeting of DUP MLAs and MPs last month, Mr Frew did not respond when asked by reporters whether he endorsed Sir Jeffrey succeeding Mr Poots as leader.

Sir Jeffrey said: "I want to thank and pay tribute to Paul Frew for his work as Economy Minister over the last number of weeks.

"He has been a dedicated minister, progressing a number of important issues in the Department for the Economy which will be of benefit to everyone in Northern Ireland in due course.

"I have taken the decision to make limited ministerial and post-holder changes at this time so as to minimise any impact personnel changes would have on the business of delivering for people across Northern Ireland.

"I am mindful that our Executive team, in conjunction with ministers from other parties, has further significant work to do in the next short period. I do however intend to conduct a more fundamental reshuffle of posts in September.

"I have appointed Gordon Lyons to be the new Minister for the Economy. Gordon is well equipped to take on the role and brings with him valuable experience, having served as a junior minister within the Executive Office and as Daera Minister for a period earlier this year."

Mr Lyons said on Twitter he was "delighted" to have been appointed as Economy Minister.
