DUP MP Sammy Wilson spotted on London Underground without face mask despite risk of £200 fine

The MP for East Antrim has sparked outrage after apparently being spotted on the London Underground without a face mask.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson has been a vocal critic of face masks throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, having previously stated that he believes there is "no proof" that they will stop the spread of the virus.

However this week, new rules came into force that saw the fine for those found not wearing a face covering on public transport in England double to £200.

This morning (Thursday, September 24) the East Antrim MP was allegedly spotted on the London Underground not wearing a face mask.

Twitter user James claims that he took a picture of Mr Wilson on the Tube saying: " Sammy Wilson MP on tube in London this morning with no mask after a £200 fine announced earlier this week. Disgrace. Rules not apply to MPs?"

On Wednesday Mr Wilson spoke in the House of Commons where he questioned predictions made about possible death tolls and infections of Covid-19.

He said: "Only time will tell whether the predictions made this week about deaths and infections of coronavirus have any credibility, or whether they're as exaggerated as the claims that there'll be half a million deaths within weeks, made at the beginning of the year."

The DUP have been contacted for comment, but have not responded at the time of publication.
